PESHAWAR: April 23, 2025: The Disaster Resilient School Infrastructure (DRSI) project is renovating 150 schools across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) to make them disaster-resilient.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) supports the project, while UN-Habitat and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are jointly implementing it.
The project covers eight districts – Buner, Malakand, Peshawar, Swat, Lower Chitral, Upper Chitral, Lower Dir, and Upper Dir.
It aims to strengthen school infrastructure against natural disasters like earthquakes and floods. The upgraded schools will meet critical safety and resilience standards and directly benefit over 30,000 students in the province.
In a recent achievement, the project team completed and handed over 24 disaster-resilient schools in Buner district to local authorities. They are currently renovating the remaining schools, which are at different stages of construction.
Officials emphasize that the project not only improves school buildings but also promotes disaster preparedness and safe learning environments.
“Our international partners are showing strong commitment to long-term educational and infrastructure development in KP,” said a UNDP spokesperson.
By upgrading these schools, the DRSI project boosts the province’s ability to respond to disasters and ensures students can continue learning safely during emergencies.
