SBBU researchers study fish, yak species in upper Chitral
CHITARL, Nov 5: The valley of Chitral is bestowed by God with a great variety of living organisms (biodiversity). The establishment of sub-campuses of the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University (SBBU) in Chitral and Booni has created hopes for giving a new vista to the present landscape of tourism by conserving the wildlife in the valley. In this context, the writer (Arif Jan) along with Muhammad Younas and Iftikhar Ahmad (lecturers department of zoology at the SBBU Booni campus) visited some important sites to explore the fish and yak species in upper Chitral. The visit was made to Laspur, Sor Laspur, Harcheen, Mastuj and Avi valleys. The famous Shandur Lake was also visited and explored for the trout species. Tehsildar Niamatullah Khan also accompanied the lecturers and assisted them in accessing these remote areas. The yak species and its domestication strategies were also studied in the fore-mentioned areas. The collected specimens were transferred to the zoological museum of SBBU, Chitral campus. The visit was fruitful and hope-giving because such attempts are highly needed to study the least studied areas of our beloved Chitral. The experts shared the information with ChitralToday to convey it to the common people which will ultimately pave the way towards conservation of the natural resources and wildlife of the area.
