Historic Women’s Trek to Terichmir Advance Base Camp

Chitral, August 2025 — Sixteen women trekkers have made history by reaching the Terichmir Advance Base Camp. This is the first-ever female expedition to the region.

The trek was organized by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority and the Terichmir Backpackers Club Pakistan, under Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s guidance.

The team included trekkers from across Pakistan and a six-year-old local boy. They crossed glaciers, ice fields, and rugged terrain to go beyond Babu Base Camp. Thirty-six porters and three guides supported them throughout the journey.

Earlier, only two male teams had reached the Terichmir Advance Base Camp. This women’s team has now set a new benchmark. Their success highlights growing female participation in high-altitude adventure sports.

Terichmir, at 7,708 meters, is the highest peak in the Hindu Kush. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has declared 2025–26 the “Year of Terichmir.”

It may be mentioned here that nine young local youth successfully scaled Terichmir peak, marking a major achievement in the region’s adventure tourism.

The initiative aims to attract climbers and boost tourism in Chitral Valley.“ This expedition is a landmark for adventure tourism and women’s empowerment,” said a spokesperson for the Culture and Tourism Authority.

“We hope it inspires more female trekkers and promotes Chitral as a hub for adventure tourism.”

The team’s achievement showcases Chitral’s breathtaking landscapes. It also strengthens the valley’s growing role in inclusive and adventure-focused tourism.
