PYO Protests Tax Imposition in Malakand Division

Chitral, July 20, 2026: The People’s Youth Organization (PYO) Chitral staged a protest against the proposed imposition of taxes in Malakand Division, particularly in Chitral.

It demanded that the government withdraw the decision and focus instead on the region’s economic development.

The demonstration drew a large number of youth, traders and local residents. Addressing the gathering, PYO leaders Qazi Waqar Iqbal, Sajjad Akhun, Sultan Ahmad Baig and others said the people of Chitral could not bear additional taxes due to the area’s fragile economic conditions.

The speakers pointed out that Chitral lacks industrial development, employment opportunities and adequate healthcare, transport and other basic infrastructure. They said the local economy had already suffered due to years of militancy and recurring natural disasters, making any new tax burden unjust.

The protesters noted that despite Chitral’s abundant natural resources, including water and minerals, local communities had yet to benefit from them. They urged the government to prioritize investment, job creation and business development instead of introducing new taxes.

The protesters announced that they would not accept the proposed taxation and warned that the protest campaign would be expanded if their demands were ignored. They said peaceful demonstrations would also be held in Drosh and Garam Chashma in the next phase.

The protest concluded with the organizers thanking local residents, traders, elders, youth and members of the media for their support and participation.
