Islamabad, April 1, 2026: The Federal Constitutional Court has taken notice of the formation of a special force in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa intended to facilitate the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, and has summoned Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.
The case was heard by a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Aminuddin. During the hearing, the court stressed that no special force should be created for a convicted individual and instructed the federal government to ensure that provincial actions remain fully compliant with the law.
The petition challenging the creation of the “Imran Khan Release Force” argued that the provincial cabinet had not authorized the formation of such a force and referenced previous court rulings related to law and order.
Justice Ali Baqar questioned whether the provincial cabinet had approved the initiative.
The court has directed Afridi to submit a formal response within 10 days and warned that any violation of legal norms could invite further judicial scrutiny.
Petitioners emphasized that establishing a special force for a convicted individual raises serious constitutional and security concerns, underscoring the need for strict adherence to the rule of law.
