GLOF Risk Alert Issued for Chitral, Three Other Districts

Staff Correspondent

Peshawar, March 31, 2026: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert for five upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amid fears of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) due to changing weather conditions.
According to PDMA, the districts of Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat and Upper Kohistan are at risk as rising temperatures and heavy rainfall may accelerate glacier melting. Authorities have warned of potential incidents including glacial lake outbursts, flash floods, and landslides.
The PDMA spokesperson said that district administrations have been directed to take emergency preparedness measures and ensure continuous monitoring of vulnerable glacial sites. Early warning systems have also been ordered to remain fully operational.
Relevant departments have been instructed to conduct evacuation drills in high-risk areas and ensure that designated relief camps are fully functional and equipped with necessary facilities.
Residents, particularly those living in low-lying areas, have been advised to remain vigilant and stay informed about possible risks. Rescue and emergency services have been put on high alert.
Tourists and travelers have been urged to avoid unnecessary visits to sensitive points while the public has been cautioned against traveling near rivers and streams due to the threat of sudden water surges.
Authorities have also directed that machinery and emergency equipment be pre-positioned, and coordination with agencies such as NHA, FWO and C&W be ensured in case of road blockages.
The PDMA Emergency Operations Center remains fully active, and citizens can contact the helpline (1700) in case of any emergency.
