CHITRAL: The federal government is likely to include the construction of the Mastuj-Broghol road in Upper Chitral in its package being finalized for Khyber Pakthunkhwa.

Besides meeting the longstanding demand of the people of the remote area, the project will improve connectivity between Pakistan and Tajikistan through the Wakhan Corridor in Afghanistan at the border of Broghol.

On repeated demands and protests, the government had recently estimated the cost of the construction of the 157km road from Mastuj to Broghol at about Rs75 billion.

The KP government had also approved the PC-II for the Feasibility Study (F/S) and Designing of the Mastuj–Broghil Road.

In the meanwhile, the federal government had shown its readiness for taking over the road and construct it through the National Highway Authority.

According to PML-N Chitral leader and former MNA Shahzada Iftikhar Uddin, the federal government has now decided to provide the required funds for the road project under the package worth Rs137 billion being finalized for Khyber Pakthunkhwa.

The federal government was preparing the development package after the removal of the PTI government through the imposition of an emergency and governor’s rule on October 11, 2026.

Shahzada Iftikhar in a statement termed the development package significant towards addressing the longstanding demand for improved road infrastructure in Chitral.

He e said that the demand for the Mastuj-Broghol Road was raised during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Spaghlasht on October 31, 2025, when he presented the concerns and development priorities of the people of Chitral.

The statement also indicated an allocation of Rs11 billion for land acquisition for Phase II of the Swat Motorway. Once completed, the project is expected to reduce travel time to Chitral and improve transport links for residents and visitors.

Furthermore, the Shahzada Iftikhar expressed hope that approval would soon be granted for the Atahk Irrigation Project in Mulkhow, along with the proposed Marble City at Gang.

The Broghol-Wakhan Road and other proposed development initiatives are expected to strengthen regional connectivity and support economic opportunities in the area.

However, the reported Rs75 billion approval and the project’s implementation details remain subject to confirmation through an official government announcement.
