Mastuj, May 21, 2026: Residents of Upper Chitral have expressed serious concern over the substandard and poor construction of Yarkhun road at Pasum Gol near Chuinj.
According to local sources, alleged negligence by the Communications and Works (C&W) Department and the contractor has resulted in substandard construction and irregularities in road widening and maintenance.
The situation has caused growing frustration among the local population, who say repeated complaints have not led to any meaningful action.

Village Council Parkusap Chairman Abdul Aziz stated that despite repeated requests to the district administration and relevant authorities, no effective measures had been taken to resolve the issue. He alleged that the contractor company, “Amanullah & Sons,” has been misleading residents by claiming a lack of funds.
Yarkhun faces humanitarian crisis; communication disrupted across Chitral
Locals claim that although official records indicate the road should be around 28 feet wide, several sections on the ground are barely 10 feet wide, making it difficult for two vehicles to pass simultaneously. Residents say this poses serious safety risks, particularly in the narrow bends of the mountainous terrain.
In a video circulating locally, a C&W official is seen stating that the road is 20 feet wide; however, residents dispute this claim, saying only improved portions were highlighted while the most critical sections were ignored.
The residents demanded immediate clearance of sharp bends, removal of large rocks, and deployment of machinery to widen the road to ensure safe two-way traffic. Locals also expressed willingness to assist authorities in minor clearance and filling work if machinery is provided.
They further alleged that the same contractor previously had executed substandard work on a bridge in the area, causing structural damage that had made it unsafe for heavy vehicles.

The locals urged the Deputy Commissioner Upper Chitral, local representatives, and the C&W Department to take urgent action, warning of strong public reaction if the issue remains unresolved. They said the road is a vital lifeline not only for local villages but also for hundreds of settlements up to the Broghil Valley.
They said immediate intervention is necessary to ensure safe and uninterrupted transportation in the region.
