CHITRAL: The growing number of rickshaws in Chitral city and adjoining areas has become a source of concern for residents, with citizens facing increasing traffic congestion, difficulties for pedestrians and fears of a rise in road accidents.
The unregulated movement of rickshaws on market roads is also affecting the smooth flow of traffic and creating difficulties for commuters.
According to local residents, the district administration had allowed 145 rickshaws to enter Chitral and subsequently imposed a ban under Section 144 on the entry of additional rickshaws. However, citizens claim that more rickshaws continue to arrive in Chitral despite the restriction, further complicating the traffic situation.
Residents have urged the district administration to establish a designated rickshaw stand outside the city or at a suitable location. They suggested that a limited number, such as 10 to 15 rickshaws, should be allowed to operate on city roads in rotation from the designated stand to help improve traffic management.
Public representatives and residents also expressed concern that some rickshaw drivers allegedly do not possess valid driving licences, while some underage or untrained individuals are reportedly operating rickshaws. They said such practices increase the risk of accidents and called for regular verification of drivers’ licences and other legal documents.
They also urged the authorities to take action against drivers who violate prescribed speed limits.
Residents called on the district administration, traffic police and other relevant departments to establish clear regulations governing the number of rickshaws, their routes and designated stands, and to ensure strict implementation of these rules.
They said effective regulation was necessary to ease traffic problems faced by citizens and reduce the risk of accidents in Chitral.
