MASTUJ: The Mastuj-Broghil Road Movement has announced that a peaceful sit-in will be held near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border at Broghil from September 15, following the failure to implement a written agreement by Suriya Bibi regarding the inauguration and practical work on the long-awaited road.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Mastuj-Broghil Road Movement held today under the chairmanship of Shahzada Sikandar-ul-Mulk. Local elders and members of the movement’s cabinet participated in the meeting.
This was stated by Ahmad Muhammad Ali,
spokesperson for Mastuj-Broghil Road Tehreek, in a statement.
The statement said that on July 23, 2026, Deputy Speaker Suriya Bibi had signed an agreement in front of thousands of protesters in Mastuj, assuring them that all legal requirements for the road would be completed within one month and that work on it would be formally inaugurated on August 23, 2026.
On the scheduled date, local elders and representatives of the movement reached Mastuj for the inauguration of work on the road. However, neither was the road inaugurated nor was there any satisfactory contact from Deputy Speaker Suriya Bibi with the movement’s representatives.
The meeting also expressed serious concern over the fact that during the movement’s long march on September 25, 2025, Deputy Speaker Suriya Bibi had reached Bang village and held negotiations with local elders, the movement’s patron-in-chief and members of its cabinet, seeking one month’s time.
Despite that assurance, no practical progress was made even after nearly 10 months, forcing the people of Mastuj to Broghil to launch another protest long march.
When the participants of the long march reached Mastuj last month, Suriya Bibi arrived there and held negotiations with thousands of protesters. She subsequently signed a written agreement before them, promising that work on the road would be inaugurated on August 23, 2026. However, despite the passage of the agreed date, the commitment has not been implemented.
The meeting expressed deep disappointment and concern over the continued failure to make practical progress despite repeated assurances and the non-implementation of the written agreement made with the people.
After detailed consultations, the meeting unanimously decided that a public mobilisation campaign and corner meetings would begin immediately. It was also decided that a peaceful and full-fledged sit-in would be held near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border at Broghil from September 15.
The protesters said the sit-in would continue until Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sohail Afridi visits the area and practical work on the Mustoj-Broghil Road is initiated.
The meeting further decided that if practical work on the road is not started despite the sit-in and Chief Minister Sohail Afridi does not visit the Broghil border to meet the protesters, the protest movement would be expanded.
Movement leaders said the people would be compelled to adopt every constitutional, legal and peaceful means of protest to secure their basic and legitimate rights, and, if necessary, announce tougher measures including a hunger strike.
The Movement said the remote and underdeveloped Broghil area has long remained deprived of basic transportation, healthcare and other essential facilities.
It said that in such a difficult region, a hunger strike could amount to risking lives, and urged the government to immediately honour its written commitment and begin practical work on the road so that public confidence could be restored.
