Temporary Fixes on Yukum Bridge Raise Safety Concerns

Brep, April 2, 2026: Yukum Bridge over the Yarkhun River, which partially collapsed last month, is currently being repaired with replacement of its broken wooden plunks.

With this, traffic will be restored to access for nearly 20,000 residents of nine villages located on the left bank of the river.

Residents told ChitraToday that the bridge is in a dilapidated condition, and with the rise in water levels it poses a potential threat to commuters.

They note that this is not the first time the bridge had suffered damage. In the past, the bridge had also collapsed, and only the broken planks were replaced.

The locals warned that while these repairs restore traffic temporarily, they do not provide a permanent solution, and a full reconstruction is needed to ensure long-term safety.

They called upon the government authorities to reconstruct the bridge instead of repairing and replacing the wooden plunges, adding the pillars of the bridge also needed reconstruction.
