BOONI: The recent heavy rain and snowfall has left all roads in Upper Chitral partially blocked or damaged in many areas.
During the inclement weather, landslides, avalanches and rock falling blocked the Chitral-Booni road and Booni-Mastuj road in many points. When the local people approached the Communication and Works (C&W) Department, its officials said that the Booni to Chitral as well as Chitral to Booni road had already been handed over to the National Highway Authority (NHA).
But so far, the NHA is nowhere to be seen as it has not yet opened its office in Upper Chitral district.
No maintenance or repair work has been carried out on the Chitral-Mastuj road for about two years. Frequent rain and snowfall has damaged the road at many points. After every rain, the blocked road is reopened by local people on self-help basis.
The latest rain and snowfall caused major damages to the road and now it is littered with boulders, rocks and landslides which can only be removed by using heavy machinery.
Moreover, people are also suffering due to poor condition of roads to Torkhow, Mulkhow and Laspur which have further been damaged by the rain.
A leader of Tehreek Huqooq-e-Awam, Muhammad Pervez Lal said the government should take immediate steps to clear the road of the debris to facilitate the commuters and avoid any fatal accident.
