Donor conference to decide measures to protect Kalash valleys against disasters
The team was led by UN resident coordinator Neil Buhne and consisted of George Khoury, Mar-Andre Franche and Dr Alexandra De Sausa. CEO Aga Khan Foundation Chitral Akhtar Iqbal and Nusrat Nasab of Focus Humanitarian Organization also accompanied them. The team met the elected representatives and notables of the valley.
Village council nazim Muhammad Rafi and councillor Khalilullah briefed the visiting UN team about the damages and destruction to public and private properties. They also thanked the UN for its efforts and assistance in the rehabilitation of the area.
Speaking on the occasion, the UN team leader said Kalash were a well known tribe all over the world for their unique culture and traditions. He said that the harmony and unity in which people of different faiths lived in the valley was an example for all nations around the world.
Unfortunately, climate change has left a far-reaching impact on the beauty of the area and the UN team was here to assess the damages and provide further help. He said a decision would be taken at the forthcoming donor conference in Peshawar about measures to be taken to protect Kalash valleys from further damages due to climate change disasters.]]>
