Peshawar, July 28, 2026: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has issued the notification of a new law governing the salaries, allowances, privileges and immunities of the provincial Assembly Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
The new la grants them a range of additional benefits and legal protections.
Under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province Speaker and Deputy Speaker’s (Immunities, Privileges, Salaries and Allowances) Act, 2026, both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be entitled to two official vehicles each.
The Speaker will additionally have access to an armoured vehicle. The law provides both officeholders immunity from arrest or detention. It also bars law-enforcement agencies from searching, entering or raiding their official residences.
For official foreign travel, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be entitled to business-class air tickets for themselves and their children. They may also be accompanied by two private attendants, whose travel will be covered on an economy-class basis.
The Speaker has also been authorised to use a government helicopter, aircraft or Pakistan Air Force helicopter for official duties.
The law further provides accommodation-related benefits. If an official residence is not provided, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will receive an alternative accommodation allowance as determined by the Finance Committee. They may retain their official residences during their tenure and for 15 days after retirement.
The Speaker may continue using the official residence until a new Speaker is elected by the succeeding Assembly.
The Finance Committee has been empowered to increase the salaries of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. The law also provides financial compensation, as approved by the committee, to the officeholder in case of injury and to legal heirs in the event of death in an accident.
Some benefits proposed in earlier drafts, including the appointment of a Grade-17 secretary, cook and driver for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, were not included in the final notified law.
The new legislation has brought the privileges and immunities of the KP Assembly’s top officeholders under a dedicated legal framework.
