Sacrificial animals await buyers in Chitral

CHITRAL, Oct 25: Due to rising inflation and may be some other reasons, the sale of sacrificial animals here has remained very low this year. A visit to different areas by this correspondent showed that makeshift animal markets had been set up in about three places places. Besides, some people also have reached the city with about dozen of animals to sell them before Eidul Azha. The sellers said that there were very few buyers this year. They, however, added that there were two more days and expressed the hope that they would be able to sell their animals. Mostly buyers come one day before Eid or even on the Eid day to bargain, one animal seller said. One man, Abid Khan said the prices of the sacrificial animals had gone out of the reach of the common man but anyhow “one has to save some money to fulfil the religious obligation.” Former UC nazim Shireen Khan told chitraltoday.net that the main cattle market had been set up in the city about three years back. About the low sale, he said in most parts of the district, especially in upper Chitral, people had their own animals and they never bought them from the markets for sacrifice due to high prices. Meanwhile, people here are facing hardship to travel to their native villages due to shortage of transport. As the people tried to reach their homes to celebrate Eid with their families, transport vehicles disappeared. Most of the vehicles plying on roads to upper parts of the valley were overloaded and the driver were fleecing the passengers by charging exorbitant fares.—Syed Nazir Hussain]]>
