Booni, July 17, 2026: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal chaired a meeting to review monsoon preparedness, potential Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risks and the effectiveness of the Early Warning System (EWS) in Upper Chitral.
The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the Secretary of Relief, Rehabilitation and Settlement, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and other relevant officials. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Upper Chitral, Moazzam Khan Bangash, participated via video link.
Participants discussed the potential impact of monsoon rains, the risk of GLOF events and measures to ensure the effective functioning of the Early Warning System.
Ahsan Iqbal said that rising temperatures and monsoon rainfall had increased the likelihood of GLOF incidents in Upper Chitral and directed all relevant departments to ensure comprehensive preparedness for any emergency.
The Secretary of Relief and Rehabilitation, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, briefed the meeting on the provincial government’s and district administration’s preparedness measures for the monsoon season and other potential emergencies.
The federal minister assured participants that the required machinery and resources would be provided to Upper Chitral to effectively respond to any emergency and ensure the protection of lives and property.
