New principles of GDC Chitral and GDC Booni.

Degree Colleges in Chitral, Booni Get New Principals

Zulfiqar Ahmad

Islamabad, April 9, 2026: The education department of Khyber Pakthunkhwa has notified new principals for the degree colleges in Chitral and Booni.

A notification issued by the Higher Education, Libraries and Archives Department confirmed that Prof Muhammad Karim Khan, a BPS-20 associate professor of Zoology, has been assigned additional charge as in-charge principal and drawing and disbursing officer (DDO) of the Govt Degree College Chitral.

Meanwhile, Assistant Professor Mazharullah has been appointed as the principal of Government Degree College Booni.

Mazharullah has been serving the GDC Booni for the past 12 years, gaining extensive experience in teaching and academic administration.

Prof Karim Khan previously served as principal of Government Degree College Booni in Upper Chitral. He was last year transferred to Dir under circumstances widely believed to be linked to political disagreements with local representatives.

The move had triggered strong backlash, with residents of Upper Chitral condemning the decision as unjust and detrimental to students’ academic progress.

“His removal was a huge loss for us,” said a student from Booni. “He was more than a principal, he was a mentor and a reformer.”

His latest appointment, however, is being seen as a corrective step.

Observers credit the provincial education department for recognising merit and restoring a capable leader to a key academic institution.

Colleagues describe Prof Khan as an educator of rare calibre, deeply committed, forward-thinking, and unwavering in his mission to uplift Chitral through education.

“This is a blessing for the college,” said a senior faculty member at Government Degree College Chitral, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“He is a man driven by purpose, someone who lives and breathes education for this region,” he added.

Students echoed similar sentiments, expressing confidence that under Prof Khan’s leadership, the institution will reach new heights.

With years of experience, strong rapport with both students and teachers, and a reputation for integrity, Prof Khan is widely expected to revitalise the academic environment and set new standards of excellence.

For many in Chitral, his appointment is not just an administrative change, it is a hopeful turning point.
