Peshawar, June 18, 2026: The KP government has approved a project to establish a one-megawatt hydropower (MHP) house in Reshun, Upper Chitral.
According to government officials, the project has been estimated to cost about Rs450 million.
Power crisis in Booni aggravates
PTI leaders claimed that the project had been approved through the efforts of Deputy Speaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Suriya Bibi, who is also member of the house from PK-1 Upper Chitral.
According to officials, the project aims to provide reliable electricity to Reshun and surrounding localities, addressing longstanding energy shortages and improving the quality of life for residents.
Sources said that the formal inauguration of the project will take place soon.
It may be mentioned here that the provincial government had launched scores of mini hydropower projects across Chitral years ago, but failed to complete them.
Restoration work on Reshun powerhouse to start after Eid
Upper Chitral has been facing an acute shortage of electricity after the destruction of the Reshun powerhouse in floods.
Despite the completion of the 106 megawatt Golen Gol power project in Lower Chitral by the federal government, Upper Chitral is still deprived of electricity.
The latest announcement comes in the wake of public protest in Reshun against the power crisis. But instead of resolving the longstanding issue by enduring supply from Golen Gol, the government has announced to set up a new power plant.
However, sources told ChitraToday that, given the PTI government’s past performance, it was uncertain whether the newly announced project would be completed to resolve the power crisis in Upper Chitral.
