Chitral, May 15, 2026: Journalists in Chitral on Friday staged a protest against rising incidents of violence, threats, forced layoffs, and restrictions on press freedom, expressing solidarity with a province-wide protest call.
The demonstration was held at the Chitral Press Club on the call of the Khyber Union of Journalists. Members of the local journalist community gathered to raise their voice for the protection of media freedom and journalists’ rights.
Speaking on the occasion, protesters said that journalists across the country, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, are facing increasing harassment, threats, and legal cases. They said many media organizations have been laying off employees, withholding salaries, and failing to pay dues, pushing journalists into serious financial difficulties.
The speakers expressed concern over the use of laws such as the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), saying notices issued under such regulations pose a threat to freedom of expression and independent journalism.
The protesters demanded immediate steps to ensure their safety, an end to forced dismissals, and prompt payment of pending salaries and dues.
They reaffirmed the commitment to continue the struggle for press freedom, protection of democratic values and the rights of media workers at all levels.
