Arrangements for Shandur festival 2023 reviewed in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: A meeting held here on Friday with the chief secretary Khyber Pakthunkhwa in the chair reviewed arrangements for the annual Shandur polo festival in Chitral to be held in the first week of July, said a statement.

The festival, held at the world’s highest polo ground, has consistently played a vibrant role in promoting tourism and showcasing the rich culture of Chitral abd Gilgit-Baltistan.

Chief Secretary Nadeem Aslam Chaudhary was given a briefing regarding the preparations and arrangements for the festival  scheduled from July 7 to 9, 2023.

Recognizing the festival’s immense significance for the country’s tourism sector, the chief secretary emphasized the utmost importance of close coordination among all relevant authorities.

In light of this, he directed that adequate facilities be provided to cater to the needs of the tourists attending the event.

However, the government is yet to take any tangible measures to improve the condition of roads leading to the venue.

People of Chitral have been protesting against stoppage of work on the Chitral-Shandur road due to unavailability of funds. 

Moreover, people of Laspur located near Shandur in Upper Chitral he have also expressed concerns over disturbances to their environment without any benefits in return. 

The residents also demand transparency in the utilization of funds released for holding the event by the government every year. 

Meanwhile, an agitation is also ongoing in both lower and upper Chitral against 100pc increase in the price of wheat provided by the government. 

A delegation of people who have launched a protest met the deputy commissioner of Lower Chitral on June 8 and warned that if Chitral’s wheat subsidy was not restored they would not allow holding of the Shandur festival by blocking roads. 

The DC assured them that he would try his best to convey their demands and concerns to the higher authorities.
