Villagers without water as Rs10m project failed to materialize

RESHUN: Despite launching a project worth about Rs10 million by the government after the 2015 floods, residents of Greenlasht village are still forced to drink water from a nullah.

The provincial government failed to properly complete the work and take action against the responsible for its failure, including the contractor, despite repeated demands by the residents.

The area people told ChitralToday that the project failed to resolve the drinking water issue of the village due to the poor planning of the public health engineering department.

They said on papers the project was shown complete and handed over to the public health department in 2017 but even today the department has not appointed any wallman to operate it.

They said the project was initiated without even conducting a survey or visit by an engineer from the department. The work was destined to fail even at the outset but the authorities concerned did not bother to take action to save the funds from going to waste.

The area residents said they exhausted all avenues to get the project completed in order to resolve the longstanding issue of drinking water shortage but to no avail.

As a last resort, they appealed to chairman District Development Advisory  Committee MPA Wazirzada and the deputy commissioner of Upper Chitral to intervene and get the water supply started to provide relief to the residents.

The residents said if the water supply system was not operationalized and action not taken against the responsible persons a protest move would be launched in the area.
