Chitral, July 28, 2026: A nine-member mountaineering team from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has summited the 6,050-metre Thalo Zom peak after an arduous expedition through the challenging mountainous terrain of Kumrat and Chitral.
According to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism Authority, the eight-day expedition began on July 9, with the team reaching the summit on July 17, where the mountaineers raised the national flag.
Thalo Zom is considered one of the most technically challenging and less frequently climbed peaks in the Hindu Kush mountain range.
During the expedition, the climbers crossed difficult routes, glaciers and crevasses in Kumrat and Chitral. Ice screws were installed at particularly challenging sections to facilitate safe progress.
The team spent nearly eight hours in continuous ascent before reaching the summit.
The expedition included nine climbers from different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Ruhullah, Umar Khan, Intikhab Khan, Nauman Sami, Izzatullah Shah, Saeed Akhtar, Naeem Khan, Fawad Khan and Rawaz Ali.
The mountaineers thanked the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority for its support and technical assistance, saying the authority’s cooperation played an important role in the successful summit.
The successful expedition is being viewed as an important milestone for promoting technical mountaineering in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and highlighting the province’s potential for adventure tourism.
Thalo Zom was first climbed by an Australian team in 1971, while Italian mountaineers successfully climbed the peak in 2019.
