Bano Qabil Exposed a Bigger Problem

Aqib Ullah

Videos are circulating on social media in which students can be seen cheating in the Bano Qabil test. The real dilemma is not that they were cheating in such an easy test. The test was never designed to fail anyone rather, it was conducted only for merit purposes so that students could be placed in classes accordingly.

Another concerning thing is that some admins and so-called critics are criticizing Jamat-e-Islami and Alkhidmat instead of lamenting the attitude and deeply rooted habit of cheating.

JI Chief Launches ‘Bano Qabil’ Programme in Chitral

The problem is not that these videos were recorded. The real question is why did students attempt cheating in such an easy test? Is it a lack of self-confidence? Or is it the failure of our education system that has normalized cheating as a built-in habit?

The answer lies in our growing dependence on shortcuts. Even a minute of independent thinking or effort has become difficult because of the lackadaisical attitude many students develop throughout their educational journey.

Instead of criticizing the Bano Qabil program, we should seriously think about how to eliminate this culture of cheating in Chitral. We should focus on training students in schools to accept failure gracefully rather than succeeding through dishonest means.

With a slight modification of Shakespeare’s quote, I request all admins and page runners to understand that the problem does not lie in Bano Qabil rather the problem lies within ourselves as we have become accustomed to dishonesty.

Even though the test was not conducted to pass or fail anyone, why did those students still feel triumphant after cheating in such an easy test? This is the concerning question….
