KARACHI, Dec 31, 2025: A double-decker bus service has been officially revived in Karachi after nearly half a century.
The service was formally inaugurated on Wednesday by Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, who launched the project by cutting the ribbon.
According to reports, the double-decker bus service has commenced on a trial basis, with five buses initially deployed on the route connecting Shahrah-e-Faisal and Malir Cantt. While the buses were launched today, passengers will be able to start commuting from Thursday, officials confirmed.
Speaking to the media after the inauguration ceremony, Memon said that the service is being introduced in phases to assess its performance and public response. He explained that the initial route has been set from Malir to Shahrah-e-Faisal, one of the busiest corridors in the city.
If the pilot project proves successful, the provincial government plans to procure a large fleet of double-decker buses, with the goal of expanding the service across Karachi by 2026.
The senior minister announced that the fare for the double-decker buses will remain the same as the Peoples Bus Service, ensuring affordability for commuters. He added that the government continues to subsidize a portion of the ticket cost so that citizens can benefit from low-cost and reliable public transport.
Sharjeel Memon further stated that efforts to improve Karachi’s road infrastructure are underway. He said that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and other relevant institutions are working round the clock on road rehabilitation projects.
“A major road development initiative is being introduced, with over Rs 9 billion allocated for road improvements. We are hopeful that by March or April, many of the city’s road-related issues will be significantly resolved,” he said.
