Dewangol bridge over Yarkhun river in front of Brep in Upper Chitral remains incomplete even after over four years.

Delay in Dewangol Jeepable Bridge Puts Lives At Risk

Khuz Dewangol Ittehad warns of legal action and protest.

Brep, Oct 18, 2025: Residents of Khuz and Dewangol have expressed deep concern over the prolonged delay in the construction of the Dewangol Jeepable Bridge over River Yarkhun in front of Brep.

They warned that in the event of any loss of life due to the dangerous sliding zone in the area, contractor Asmar Khan, the relevant government departments, and provincial authorities will be held responsible.

The project, which was approved in 2021 following the historic struggle of the Khuz Dewangol Ittehad, remains incomplete more than four years later. Deputy Speaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Suriya Bibi and PTI Upper Chitral President Shahzada Sikandarul Mulk, along with officials concerned, have visited the site several times and are fully aware of the hazardous situation faced by the local population.

Schoolchildren have to travel on foot through a sliding area of Chokul What to reach their school in Brep from Dewangol.
Young students have to commute to their schools in Brep and back risking their lives.

Beyond the incomplete bridge in Dewangol lies a treacherous sliding zone that residents, including schoolchildren from Dewangol and Khuz traveling to Brep, must cross daily. The route poses a serious threat to commuters, particularly during rainfall and seismic activity.

During the earthquake in Oct 17, several people miraculously escaped harm in this same sliding area, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Despite repeated promises by elected representatives and provincial officials, work on the project has not resumed. Local community leaders have now announced that if construction does not begin within the current week, they will file a legal case against contractor Asmar Khan and engineers of the department concerned.

Additionally, they plan to stage a hunger strike and hold a sit-in outside the DC Office in Booni, asserting their right to safe and reliable access.

The people of Khuz Dewangol maintain that they are left with no option but to pursue legal action and peaceful protest to ensure the timely completion of this critical infrastructure project, which they regard as essential for public safety and development.
