Police Urged to Enforce Ban on Illegal Duck Hunting

CHITRAL: October 7, 2025: Local elders and civil society members have called upon the police to take strict action against hunters involved in the illegal killing of migratory ducks in different parts of Upper and Lower Chitral, despite the imposition of Section 144 by both district administrations.

They said that both deputy commissioners had issued clear directives banning the establishment of artificial ponds and hunting of migratory birds during the seasonal periods.

However, hunters have continued their activities in open defiance of the law, carrying out large-scale hunting, particularly during early morning hours.

The elders pointed out that the situation is particularly alarming in the stretch of river between Chitral Airport and the Chitral–Mastuj Road, where military helicopters also operate regularly.

They warned that the unchecked presence of armed hunters in this sensitive area poses not only a threat to wildlife but also increases the risk of serious accidents.

Social circles urged the police and Wildlife Department to conduct joint operations to dismantle illegal ponds and arrest those violating the ban. They stressed that Section 144 should be implemented in letter and spirit, and no leniency should be shown to violators.

Chitral has two migratory duck seasons — from February to April and from September to November. During these periods, hunters dig large ponds along riverbanks to trap the birds. Before dawn, they take up positions with firearms, and as soon as the ducks land to rest, the hunters open fire indiscriminately, killing them instantly.

With several such illegal hunting sites spread across the district, very few ducks manage to cross Chitral safely. Locals described the ongoing situation as a “tragic slaughter” of harmless migratory birds and demanded that the police take immediate and decisive action to end the illegal practice.

They emphasised that strict enforcement by law enforcement agencies is essential to preserve wildlife and maintain public safety.
