Camps set up for residents of Madak Lasht near Drosh after GLOF alert in Shishi Koh.

GLOF Alert Prompts Evacuations in Shishi Koh

CHITRAL, Aug 25, 2025: Authorities evacuated hundreds of families in Shishi Koh, Lower Chitral, after a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) warning.

Rescue 1122 teams and Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) volunteers moved residents from riverside areas, including Madak Lasht, to temporary camps. The early warning tower in Madak Lasht detected danger from a nearby glacier on Saturday. Officials evacuated people along the Shishi Koh and Chitral rivers down to Drosh town.

Rescue, medical, and police teams stayed on duty through the night to handle emergencies. Deputy Commissioner Chitral Rao Hashim Azim visited the area on Sunday to review safety measures.

The UNDP GLOF-II Project had already identified many glacier-prone areas in Lower and Upper Chitral. Early warning towers now alert communities to potential floods caused by climate change.
