Cricketer Released on Bail After Arrest Over Sexual Assault

MANCHESTER (August 8, 2025) — Pakistani cricketer Haider Ali

has been released on bail after his arrest in Manchester over an alleged sexual assault, according to Greater Manchester Police.
Police said the 24-year-old batsman was taken into custody earlier this week in connection with an incident reported to have occurred during the Pakistan Shaheens‘ recent tour of England. He has been ordered to return for further questioning in two weeks and has been barred from leaving the United Kingdom while inquiries continue.

PCB Suspends Haider Ali

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that Haider Ali has been suspended from all cricketing activities pending the outcome of the investigation.

“Haider Ali is under investigation in a criminal matter in Manchester. He has been suspended and will be provided legal assistance to ensure his rights are protected,” the PCB said, adding it would not comment further until legal proceedings conclude.

Who is Haider Ali?

Haider Ali, a right-handed top-order batsman who made his international debut in 2020, has represented Pakistan in Test, One-Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) formats. He was in England with the Shaheens, a development squad that gives emerging players exposure to overseas conditions. (Profile: ESPNcricinfo.)

Legal Context and Reaction

The case has drawn notable attention in Pakistan and among cricketing circles. Legal analysts say UK bail conditions generally aim to keep an accused person available for questioning and to prevent interference with ongoing inquiries. No charges have been filed to date, and investigators say inquiries are ongoing.

The incident has reignited debate about player conduct during overseas tours and the responsibilities of cricket boards to manage off-field behaviour.
