Chitral’s roads need unity, not politics

Abdul Aziz Khan

Following the press conference by Jamaat-e-Islami Lower Chitral’s district leader Wajihuddin regarding the deteriorating condition of roads in Chitral, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Chitral has also held a press conference under the leadership of former provincial assembly candidate Maulana Faiz Muhammad. In this conference, a warning was issued to launch a Kafan Poshi Tehreek (a protest movement symbolizing extreme desperation) after Eid.

It is indeed encouraging to see both of Chitral’s popular religious political parties raise their voice over such a critical issue. However, a sincere appeal is made to the leadership of both parties do not weaken the movement by running separate campaigns. Just as you have formed alliances for MNA and MPA seats, why not unite for the cause of Chitral’s roads?

Not only should Jamaat-e-Islami and JUI work together, but other key stakeholders such as Chitral Development Movement (CDM), led by its founder and chairman Advocate Waqas should also be brought on board. This would strengthen the movement and rally the public behind it.

We boldly ask the National Highway Authority (NHA) if there was no funding available, why were the roads dug up in the first place? Why wasn’t the road built with whatever funds were available? Did you remove the existing tarmac just to pocket the money allocated for that purpose? If so, this is a grave injustice to the people of Chitral.

Furthermore, we are surprised by the response of Pakistan Muslim League representatives, who always seem to announce the arrival of federal delegations and release of funds whenever such movements begin. If the funds were indeed released, why hasn’t the roadwork resumed?

Let it be clear if this time anyone whether from within or outside tries to sabotage the movement or obstruct the road construction in any way, they will be deemed a traitor to Chitral and its people.
