PTCL purchases Telenor Pakistan

Telenor\’s transition and PTCL\’s responsibility in Chitral

In December 2023, Telenor Pakistan underwent a significant shift in its operations with the complete sale of its business in Pakistan to Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL).

While such transitions often bring about changes, it\’s imperative for the new management to uphold the standards of service provision set by its predecessor. However, recent events in Chitral paint a concerning picture of neglected connectivity in the region, raising questions about PTCL\’s commitment to serving even the most remote areas.

Telenor\’s legacy of service: Telenor Pakistan had established itself as a leading telecom provider, not only in urban centers but also in remote regions like Chitral. Its dedication to connectivity, even in challenging terrains and harsh weather conditions, was commendable and served as a lifeline for communities in these areas.

Challenges faced by Arkari Valley: Chitral, nestled in the scenic beauty of northern Pakistan, is no stranger to harsh winters. However, the recent heavy snowfall severely disrupted Telenor\’s services in the Arkari Valley, leaving residents without reliable communication channels. Despite the challenges, Telenor made efforts to maintain its services, understanding the critical role connectivity plays in emergencies and everyday life.

Neglected connectivity under PTCL: Unfortunately, the transition to PTCL has not brought the same level of commitment to service maintenance and community engagement. Reports indicate that despite repeated disruptions in connectivity and pleas from locals, PTCL has failed to address the issue adequately. The complete signal outage across Arkari Valley is not just an inconvenience but a potential threat to public safety and economic activity.

As the new custodian of telecom services in Pakistan, PTCL must prioritize the restoration of connectivity in Chitral, particularly in areas like Arkari Valley. It is not merely a matter of business operations but a responsibility to the communities it serves. PTCL should take immediate steps to assess the situation on the ground, allocate necessary resources for infrastructure maintenance, and establish proactive communication channels with locals to address their concerns.

Connectivity is not a luxury but a fundamental need in today\’s world, especially in remote regions like Chitral.

The recent disruptions in Telenor\’s services following its transition to PTCL underscore the importance of responsible management and community engagement in the telecom sector. PTCL has a chance to demonstrate its commitment to serving all Pakistanis, regardless of their geographic location. It\’s time for PTCL to step up, fulfill its obligations, and ensure that connectivity remains uninterrupted, even in the face of adversity.
