Chitral, June 26, 2026: Rescue 1122 teams continued their search operation on Friday after a taxi carrying a woman and her child rolled into the Chitral River at Dwashish, Lower Chitral late on Thursday.
According to initial reports, the driver of a Toyota Vitz taxi parked the vehicle under the shade of a Chinar tree at Dwashish opposite the Chitral Scouts mosque and stepped out to buy something from a nearby shop. A woman and her child remained inside the vehicle.
In the driver’s absence, the parked car reportedly began rolling and plunged into the Chitral River. Local residents said the accident occurred because there was no protective wall or roadside barrier at the river’s edge.
The vehicle, along with the woman and child, was swept away by the strong current. Rescue 1122 personnel have been conducting a search operation since the incident, but the missing occupants and the vehicle had not been recovered at the time of filing this report.
The tragedy has renewed concerns over the lack of safety infrastructure along the riverside road. Residents have urged the authorities to construct protective barriers at vulnerable locations to help prevent similar accidents in the future.
