Barriers Broken: Ali Sarwar’s Rise

ISLAMABAD, May 9, 2026: Once considered a long shot, Ali Sarwar has shattered barriers that kept Chitrali youngsters out of the officer ranks, climbing from a small dusty village to the prestigious rank of colonel in the Pakistan Army.

His journey is more than a personal triumph. It is a beacon of hope for a district often overlooked in national institutions.

Back in the early 2000s, the road to a military commission for Chitralis was notoriously steep.

Most who managed to break through ended up in the Pakistan Army’s education corps, while the dream of leading troops in the field seemed almost impossible.

Many local young boys gave up, frustrated by the perception that Chitrali boys were rarely given preference for officer positions.

But Ali Sarwar refused to accept the limits others imposed on him.

Initially, Ali dreamed of donning a white coat as a doctor. After completing his FSc from a local degree college, however, he swapped stethoscopes for khaki, taking the bold first step of applying for the ISSB, the initial examination to secure an officer’s commission.

With no family history in the military, except for an elder brother, Hakim Sarwar Khan, serving as a junior commissioned officer (JCO), Ali had no blueprint, only ambition and sheer grit.

Despite scepticism and local doubts, Ali’s determination paid off. He earned his commission as a second lieutenant in Pakistan Army and made history as one of the few Chitrali officers to break into the army’s leadership ranks. From there, his career trajectory was meteoric.

As a young captain, Ali Sarwar earned the Tamgha-e-Basalat for exemplary leadership during the Swat operation against militants. This was a recognition of courage under fire.

His dedication and strategic acumen earned him critical command postings, including key assignments in Saudi Arabia, which further solidified his reputation as a rising star in the military.

Today, as a colonel, Ali Sarwar embodies determination, resilience, and the courage to defy expectations.

His story is not just about personal success. It represents the potential of Chitral’s youth and the power of breaking barriers.

From the rugged peaks of Booni to the elite corridors of Pakistan’s military, Ali Sarwar’s journey is far from over. It has already become legendary, inspiring a generation to believe that no dream is too distant and no glass ceiling unbreakable.
