Chitral, Feb 1, 2026: Frequent attacks by stray dogs on the endangered Markhor in and around Balach Payin have emerged as a serious concern, posing a grave threat to the survival of the species and the ecological balance of the area.
The Markhor, Pakistan’s national animal and an internationally protected species, has been coming under daily attacks by stray dogs, leaving several animals injured and vulnerable. The alarming situation has prompted urgent action from both the local community and the Wildlife Department.
In this regard, a meeting was held at Village Conservation Committee (VCC) Balach Payin, attended by local elders, officials of the Wildlife Department Chitral Gol National Park and field staff. During the meeting, community representatives informed the participants that stray dogs are repeatedly attacking Markhor, creating serious risks for their survival.
Officials of the Wildlife Department acknowledged the severity of the issue and shared their field observations with the participants. Range Officer Tahir Hussain said immediate and effective measures are essential to protect the Markhor and stressed the importance of close and continuous coordination between the local community and the Wildlife Department Chitral Gol National Park.
The meeting reached a consensus that the Wildlife Department will continue regular monitoring in the affected areas, while practical steps will be taken to control the stray dog population. Community members also committed to promptly reporting any attack or suspicious incident to the Wildlife Department’s field staff to ensure timely action.
Both VCC Balach and the Wildlife Department Chitral Gol National Park reaffirmed their commitment to work jointly for the protection and conservation of the Markhor, ensuring that future generations can continue to benefit from this valuable national heritage and that the natural beauty and wildlife of the region remain preserved.
