ISLAMABAD, Jan 31, 2026: In a bid to bolster operational leadership and enhance branch operations, the Bank of Khyber (BOK) has appointed Gul Buhar Khan, a veteran banking executive, as senior executive vice president (SEVP) and head of its branch banking division, retail banking group.

Khan, 53, a dynamic banking leader, brings over two decades of experience managing large-scale banking operations across the country.
His appointment is widely regarded as a decisive step towards enhancing efficiency, regulatory compliance, and customer service across BOK’s extensive branch network.
Before joining the BOK, Khan was serving as executive vice president and general manager of retail banking at the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), overseeing both conventional and Islamic banking operations in Karachi and Islamabad.
Under his stewardship, NBP’s branch network expanded, while operational efficiency and compliance standards were maintained across major urban centres, an achievement lauded by industry observers.
Earlier in his career, Khan held senior operational positions at Habib Bank Ltd (HBL), managing branches in northern regions of the country, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He later served as regional chief executive for Sialkot and Mardan regions, where he implemented reforms that improved branch efficiency, streamlined processes, and strengthened customer engagement.
Khan began his professional journey in 2004 with Standard Chartered Bank, progressing steadily through management ranks to emerge as a recognised leader in branch banking. Khan’s academic background combines technical and managerial expertise.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Engineering & Technology (UET), Peshawar, and an MBA from Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), both earned on merit scholarships.
His executive education includes a master trainer programme with Ron Kaufman, a global expert in customer service and leadership, and a senior executive programme at LUMS, equipping him with strategic leadership and team management skills essential for leading large, complex operations.
Khan’s appointment comes at a pivotal juncture for the country’s banking sector, which is contending with slower economic growth, inflationary pressures, and elevated non-performing loans in certain segments.
Retail banking, in particular, faces disruption from digital transformation, evolving customer expectations, and intensifying competition from fintech firms and technologically advanced banks.
Analysts emphasise that placing an experienced operational leader such as Khan at the helm of BOK’s branch banking division underscores the importance of strong leadership in sustaining efficiency, regulatory compliance, and superior customer experience.
Inam Ullah, a retired top banker and banking analyst commented, “Gul Buhar Khan brings a rare combination of operational expertise and strategic insight to the regional banking sector. His appointment will certainly have a significant impact on branch performance and customer satisfaction.”
BOK, a regional bank with a strong presence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern parts of the country, has made retail growth and branch-level performance central to its strategic priorities.
Industry observers note that the bank’s move reflects a broader trend among mid-sized and regional banks: appointing seasoned executives like Khan to divisional leadership roles to navigate economic uncertainties, regulatory complexities, and shifting customer expectations.
With Khan now leading the branch banking division, BOK aims to streamline operations, reinforce compliance, and drive growth across its network, consolidating its regional position while remaining competitive in an era of rapid digital innovation.
