Governor’s Delay on CM’s Resignation Throws Politics into Uncertainty

PESHAWAR, Oct 11, 2025: Political uncertainty is mounting in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after Governor Faisal Karim Kundi declined to grant immediate approval to Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s resignation, despite formally receiving his handwritten letter earlier on Saturday.

The unusual delay has fuelled speculation about legal complexities and political maneuvering behind the scenes.

According to official details, Brigadier (R) Musaddiq Abbasi, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Anti-Corruption, personally delivered Gandapur’s resignation to the Governor House. The letter was handed over to caretaker staff and officially received at 2:30 PM, as noted on the receipt. Dated October 11, the resignation was handwritten and signed by Gandapur.

Speaking to the media, Governor Faisal Karim Kundi confirmed receiving the letter but stressed that constitutional and legal procedures must be thoroughly examined before any formal decision.

“The resignation has been received and recorded. Further action will follow after legal scrutiny,” he said, without committing to a timeline for approval.

Sources within the Governor House, however, revealed that initial legal formalities have already been completed, prompting questions about the real reasons for the delay. The Governor has summoned his legal team on Monday to seek a final constitutional opinion and discuss possible implications. Officials explained that the legal staff will not be available on Sunday, which has pushed the consultation to the start of the week.

The unexpected deferral has triggered political activity on multiple fronts. Party insiders say Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is contemplating moving a no-confidence motion against Gandapur if the resignation is not approved within the expected timeframe. Such a move would allow the party to control the transition and prevent any legal ambiguity over the province’s leadership.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s political adviser, Rana Sanaullah, has claimed that the opposition is capable of forming a government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. His statement has added fuel to the growing political intrigue, suggesting that realignments or backdoor negotiations could be underway as the situation evolves.

The Governor House’s legal team is expected to review the constitutional provisions, assess potential complications, and chart the future course of action regarding Gandapur’s resignation on Monday. Until then, the province’s political landscape remains uncertain, with both legal experts and political players closely watching the unfolding developments.
