A call to act
Denying the role of religious schools in making society a better place to live is something that cannot be ignored or overlooked, as they are considered highly respected institutions in the society we live in.
Their voices are heard by everyone, and they are given priority and reverence by people from all walks of life. It is the onus of every individual who is an alim or alima to actively fulfill their role by guiding others on how the challenges and distractions we face today can be addressed through the teachings of Allah and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). A few suggestions came to my mind, and I felt it was incumbent upon me to share them, as this is the least I can do as someone who considers himself just a learner.
In every village, there are more than five or ten men or women who have received proper religious education and are held in high regard. They can form a small community, setting aside personal and political differences, to foster prosperity and encourage people to follow the true teachings of Islam. The sacrifice required is to leave behind those personal and political grudges , which I believe is achievable for any rational individual.
Technology can also be used in this endeavor Viz, a WhatsApp group can be created to share weekly topics addressing social issues, which can then be incorporated into Friday sermons. When the same topic is discussed in every mosque, it will show unity among our respected imams and ulama, and will be more than ample to raise awareness about the importance of bringing positivity not only into our own lives but also into the lives of others.
This small community led by the ulama can be enough to influence public perception and discourage the many futile practices prevalent in our society. People not conversant with the true teachings of Islam will be genuinely pleased to find proper guidance from their local scholars.
Taking the first practical step is essential if we truly wish to bring about positive change , as history attests, even small steps can lead to great change.
