Fertility rate declines in Pakistan: UN

ISLAMABAD: The fertility rate in Pakistan fell from six live births per woman to 3.6 per woman in the past 30 years.

According to the World Fertility Report of the United Nations, the  rate in Pakistan decreased to 3.6 in 2024 which was 6 in 1994.

This rate in 2023 was 3.2 per woman, which was 1.88 lower than in 2022.

According to the report, in 2024, 1.8 billion people living in 63 countries had entered the phase of depopulation.

It said global childbearing rates had declined almost continuously over the past half a century, from an average total fertility rate of 4.8 births per woman in 1970 to 2.2 in 2024.

Women today bear one child fewer, on average, than they did around 1990, when the global fertility rate stood at 3.3.

The report urges governments to enact effective laws to ban child marriage, protect the rights of women and girls, and ensure full access to reproductive health care.
