Ayaz Sadiq becomes NA speaker again

ISLAMABAD: Ayaz Sadiq of PML-N was on Friday elected as the 23rd speaker of the National Assembly for the second time.

Sadiq was a joint candidate of the PML-N, PPP and other parties and received 199 votes against 91 of Muhammad Aamir Dogar of the Sunni Ittehad Council.

The election of the speaker was held at a session of the National Assembly chaired by outgoing speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf. During the session, the Sunni Ittehad Council members in the house, as usual, continued chanting slogans and disrupting the proceedings.

It may be noted that Ayaz Sadiq remained speaker of the National Assembly during the tenure of the PML-N from 2013 to 2018.

Meanwhile, Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah of PPPP has been elected as Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.

He secured 197 votes whilst the candidate of Sunni Ittehad Council Junaid Akbar bagged 92 votes. One vote was declared invalid.
