PESHAWAR: Speakers at a symposium on tourism in Chitral held here urged the government to remove hurdles that keep tourists from visiting the scenic valley.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism Department, Frontier Corps North and Pakistan Army jointly organized the symposium.

The event highlighted the importance of the conservation of Chitral’s magnificent cultural heritage and promotion of tourism.

Speakers from tourism and other sectors said Chitral is one of the most attractive tourist destinations of Pakistan with huge economic, cultural and heritage potential which nee to be further developed.

They also emphasized the role of various departments in the promotion of tourism.

They, however, regretted that despite having scenic beauty and cultural heritage, tourists still avoid visiting Chitral mainly because of the lack of facilities.

They said the main hurdle keeping foreign tourists from Chitral was the condition of NOC which they need to take from security agencies.

They said for the last over a decade the condition of roads to different valleys in Chitral had deteriorated and mega projects to construct new roads were put in the cold storage.

Untill and unless the government ensure the construction of roads to tourist destinations such as Kalash valley, Garam Chashma and Mastuj, Broghil, tourism cannot be promoted in Chitral.

The stakeholders called upon the government to ensure completion of the road infrastructure projects and facilitate access to Chitral’s tourist destinations.
