Discrepancies in Chitral-Booni-Shandur road project

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my deep concerns regarding the ongoing widening and carpeting project of the Chitral-Booni-Shandur Road. While the initiative holds great promise for connecting communities and boosting local economies, recent developments have raised serious questions about the integrity of the project’s execution.

It is disheartening to witness the rampant corruption and negligence that appears to have seeped into this significant infrastructure project. The initial objective of improving accessibility and connectivity for the people of Chitral and its surrounding regions has been overshadowed by allegations of embezzlement, kickbacks, and compromised material quality. This not only undermines the credibility of the project but also erodes the trust of the citizens who were eagerly anticipating its positive impacts.

The road between Chitral, Booni, and Shandur holds immense potential to foster trade, tourism, and social integration. However, the reported mismanagement and lack of oversight have hindered progress and compromised the safety of those who travel along these routes. Potholes, uneven surfaces, and substandard construction are not only detrimental to the vehicles that traverse these roads but also pose grave risks to the lives of passengers.

The sublet contractor has damaged the gigantic Rocky Mountains along the riverbank by blasting in through dynamite; and by throwing debris into the Chitral River, including huge rocks hampering the smooth flow of water. Such irresponsible acts have serious consequences for people down south to bear as once these rocks slightly move, they cause floods.

It is the duty of the relevant authorities and government bodies to address these pressing issues promptly and transparently. The people of Chitral deserve a thorough investigation into the alleged corruption, followed by strict actions against those found guilty.

Additionally, establishing a rigorous quality control mechanism to ensure the use of durable materials and adherence to construction standards is imperative. The local communities have been raising their voices through an apolitical forum Chitral Development Movement (CDM) for the past many years but nobody listens to their hue and cry.

I appeal to the concerned stakeholders to prioritize the well-being of the people over personal gain. We need this road not just as a physical pathway but as a symbol of progress, unity, and development for Chitral and its neighboring regions. Let us not allow corruption and negligence to overshadow the bright future that this infrastructure project could offer.

Suo motu notices should be taken on such blatant acts of dishonesty with the country and its people, and the culprits should be brought to justice.

In conclusion, I urge the government, the oversight bodies, and the citizens to join hands in demanding accountability and transparency throughout the process. By doing so, we can ensure that the Chitral-Booni-Shandur Road project fulfills its true potential and becomes a testament to responsible governance and sustainable development.
