The Hidden Peaks of High Hindu Kush

Prof. Rahmat Karim Baig

Mountaineering in Chitral has been discussed in many articles by many mountain lovers, and pictures of only a few of the scores of peaks have been featured in mountaineering articles. The more famous ones, like Terich Mir, Noshaq, Istoro Nal, Saraghrar, etc., have been shown to viewers. They also have a climbing history, but it is incomplete.

There are numerous peaks above 6,000m but less than 7,000m, standing very close to each other in the valleys of the high section of this chain. The main peaks are situated in Atahk, Udren, Roshgol, Ziwar Gol and Ujnu Gol—and this section of the Hindu Kush has been named the High Hindu Kush. Besides the four giant massifs named above, there are countless smaller peaks in the same valleys, some of which have local names, but a large majority have no names at all. It means that the Hindu Kush has not been explored thoroughly.

The hidden peaks in these valleys include Gumbaz-e-Safid, Darband Zom, Konj, Koh-e-Mandaras, Prechu Zom, Shayoz Zom, Sha Dahar, Langar Zom East, Akher Chioh, Kotgaz Zom, Lunko Hawar, Lunko Dusare, Nobaison Zom, Istor Ghoni, Urgent Zom, Koh Tez, Shigeik Zom Main, Noshaq East, Shingeik Zom North, Koh Nadir Shah, etc. All the above-given peaks are above 6,000m and cannot be seen from any village, ghari, high pasture, etc., unless you go into the particular valley to be able to see the peak and take a picture to show to the world. Hence, they are hidden peaks.

Those young men who love climbing and exploring and are interested in these peaks may approach the writer of this article and get information/guidance after making full preparations for a trek of 7 to 12 days.
