PESHAWAR: The Khyber Union of Journalists held protest rally against the recent amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) and termed it a step by the government to gag the media.

Senior journalists from different print and electronic media attended the protest rally held outside the outside Peshawar Press Club.  President Khyber Union of Journalists Nasir Hussain led the rally.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Hussain said we have rejected the ordinance amending the draconian law.

PECA ordinance is not only against journalists but it is also an attempt to silence freedom of speech by every citizen. The entire media community is united against the law and to get it repealed, he added.

Senior journalist Syed Bukhar Shah and Baseer Qalandar said journalist organizations will not accept such a black law. We are part of a democratic society and government by design moved this law to abolish freedom of speech.

The protest ended with the demand for freedom of the media.
