Chitral road blocked after loaded truck overturns at Ashiret

CHITRAL: Accidents involving loaded vehicles have become common on Lowari road due to snowy and icy surface following heavy snowfall on Jan 13.

The police and Levy personnel have repeatedly directed that vehicles on the road should use tyre chains but most of the time the drivers do not follow the instructions.

Chitral Levies on Sunday said a truck carrying cement to Chitral overturned at Changol in Ashiret due to which the Chitral-Dir road was blocked.

Chitral Levies personnel reached the spot and with the help of the stranded passengers and local people removed the cement from the road.

The road remained blocked as the truck was lying overturned and there was no machinery to remove it from the narrow road.

On Jan 29, another truck loaded with soft drinks on way to Chitral from Peshawar also overturned at the same spot in Ashiret blocking the road for hours.

A number of passengers told ChitralToday that the government departments tasked with maintenance of the road as well as the construction of the Lowari tunnel approach roads were not seriously working to keep the main road safe and clear snow in the winter season.

The road from Chitral to other parts of the country remained closed for three days after heavy snowfall on Jan 13. As a result, hundreds of people remained stuck on both sides of the tunnel.

The commuters said the government should ensure that the departments, including the National Highway Authority (NHA), arranged machinery to remove snow and other obstacles from the road well on time to avoid hardship to the passengers.

They said the police or levies personnel were neither supposed to keep the road clear of snow nor had the expertise to do so but as the passengers suffered miseries day in and day out they reached to their help.

The police instead of trying to help the stranded people should do better in that to catch hold of the culprits who are supposed to provide such service and whip them to do their duty. The administration should use it’s powers and arrest the culprits.
