KP to abolish district tier of local govt system

PESHAWAR: The KP government is all set to abolish the district governments which have been so far the most effective tier of the local government system.

After doing away with the district tier, the remaining two tiers, the tehsil and village and neghbourhood councils, would be further strengthened.

The decision in this regard was taken by the provincial government during a meeting chaired by Imran Khan during his visit to Peshawar on Saturday.

Minister for Local Government Shahram Khan Tarakai said that tehsil councils were more accessible to the citizens compared to the district governments. He said several functions of the district and tehsil governments were overlapping and that was why the government had decided to abolish the district tier of the LG system.

In reply to a question, the minister said the government was yet to decide whether to bring a new law or make changes to the local government law to abolish the district tier of the local government system.

He was also not sure about the completion of the current local governments which is due to expire by the end of May 2019.
