DROSH, Nov 30: Like other parts of the country, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) observed a shutter-down strike in Chitral and Drosh on Sunday against the killing of its central leader Khalid Mehmood Soomro.
In both the major towns, business activities came to a standstill and activists of the JUI-F blocked road and chanted slogans against the murder of their leader.
At a gathering in Attaliq bazaar in Chitral speakers strongly condemned the killing of Dr Soomro and said it was a failure of the government in providing protection to religious leaders. The local leaders of the JUI-F also asked the party activists to remain peaceful as the enemies were trying to provoke them to sabotage peace in the country.
In the Drosh town, protesters, led by JUI-F leader Maulana Inamaul Haq, took to the streets and blocked the main Chitral-Peshawar road. As a result, passengers and other vehicles going to other districts and coming to Chitral were seen taking long detours from different streets of the town. The commuters here are facing hardship in reaching their destinations. When this report was filed at about 12:30pm the road in the Drosh town was blocked by hundreds of angry protesters. The protesters were chanting slogans demanding immediate arrest of the JUI-F leader.–Abbas Hussain
