Govt Moves Towards Uniform Power Tariff in Upper, Lower Chitral

Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD: The federal government is preparing a summary to introduce a uniform electricity tariff for Upper and Lower Chitral.

This is following earlier directives issued by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his visit to Chitral on October 31, 2025.

The development was discussed during a meeting between Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari and former MNA Shahzada Iftikhar Uddin at the minister’s office.

During the meeting, Leghari also spoke with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Secretary Dr Fakhre Alam about the proposed tariff arrangement, according to Shahzada Iftikhar.

Additional Secretary Mahfooz Ahmed Bhatti will prepare the summary on behalf of the federal government and send it to the chief secretary for further action on October 30.

The move is expected to address the long-standing demand for equal electricity tariff rates in Upper and Lower Chitral, including the area of Kuh. Residents are awaiting a lasting solution to the issue.

The matter of excessive load-shedding in Drosh and other parts of Chitral was also raised. Shahzada Iftikhar said that efforts are underway to take up the issue with the federal government, as prolonged power outages have made life difficult for electricity consumers in the region.

The people of Reshun and nearby areas have repeatedly staged protests and sit-ins against exorbitant power tariffs in the recent months.
