Chitral police crack down on public transporters

CHITRAL, March 22: The Chitral police launched a crackdown on transporters for overcharging the passengers on different routes. policeOn the direction of District Police Officer (DPO) Ghulam Hussain, the traffic police took action against transporters who were found charging fares more than the ones fixed by the police and the local administration. The campaignw as launched on rising public complaints. According to the Chitral police, they booked some 40 vehicles and collected 13,500 rupees as fine from them for overcharging. The DPO received complaints from passengers that the transporters were getting extra fares on the route between Islamabad and Chitral and Peshawar, Temergara and Dir to Chitral. The traffic police stopped the public transport vehicles near the PIA office and asked the passengers how much fares the transporters had received form them. When the passengers told the police that they were charged more, the police recovered the extra money form the drivers. It may be mentioned that the main road to and from Chitral has been blocked at Lowari pass due to the heavy snowfall and passengers can travel for two days a week through Lowari tunnel. But they are being fleeced by transporters in Dir and Peshawar. Social and political circles of Chitral hailed the step by the Chitral police and demanded that the provincial government should direct the police in other districts for launching a similar crackdown against transporters who were looting the passengers.–Gul Hamaad Farooqi  ]]>
