Widespread rains, snowfall block roads in Chitral

CHITRAL, March 17: Widespread and intermittent rains and snowfall for the last about 48 hours have blocked roads to different valleys in Chitral. The snowfall in upper Chitral also continued. However, the snow was melting away making the roads into muddy tracks. In lower parts of Chitral, the Garam Chashma and Kalash valleys have been cut off as the main roads connecting these areas have been blocked. The Garam Chashma road was blocked at Shoghor and Achu while the Kalash valley track was cut off at Oshan after boulders fell on the roads. Passengers at these points were seen walking towards their destinations carrying their luggage on their shoulders. Reports said that the Shekhan Deh village of Kalash valley in upper Chiral, Mastuj, Khot, Shagram and Terich had received over two feet of snow, confining the residents to their houses. On the other hand, due to the more restrictions put on the movement of passengers across the under-construction Lowari tunnel by the NHA, supply of essential commodities to Chitral has badly affected and the area is facing shortfall. In this situation, the consumers have been left at the mercy of hoarders who have started looting the people as the district administration remains oblivious to the issue.–Nazir Hussain]]>
