KPK assembly passes unanimous resolution for daily opening of tunnel

PESHAWAR, Jan 20: The KPK assembly on Monday unanimously passed a resolution for the daily eight-hour opening of the under-construction Lowari tunnel to facilitate the people of the landlocked valley in the winter season.

The resolution was moved by MPA Saleem Khan from lower Chitral (PK-90) and seconded by members from different political parties, including Shah Farman of the PTI, Muhammad Ali (JI) from Upper Dir, Syed Jaffar Shah of the ANP from Swat, Orangzeb Khan of the PML-N, Sikandar Khan Sherpao of the Qaumi Watan Party, Mufti Syed Janan of the JUI and Ms Nighat Orakzai of the PPP.

The resolution stated that due to the closure of the land route in the winter Chitral was facing a crisis-like situation with supply of essential commodities stopped and people stranded on both sides of the Lowari Pass. It added that in order to ensure supply of daily-use items and movement of passengers and heavy traffic to and from Chitral, the tunnel should be opened for eight hours on a daily basis.

Under the rules, after the passage of the resolution by the house, it would be forwarded to the federal government to direct the departments concerned for its proper implementation. It may be noted that some weeks back, the KPK government had announced the opening of the tunnel for full two days every week. But when on the first opening day, hundreds of passengers reached the tunnel early in the morning the NHA staff did not allow them.

The passengers, including women and children, were forced to wait till 12 noon in the knee-deep snow to cross the passageway. Since then, the passengers have been undergoing similar insulting treatment at the NHA staff on both sides of the tunnel.
