PM opens work on mega projects

GILGIT, Sept 28: On his first official tour to Gilgit-Baltistan, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Friday launched two multi-million dollar projects at the Korakorum Highway (KKH) which included realignment as well as upgradation of Karakuram highway. [caption id="attachment_4535" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="PM in Gilgit.-- Pamir times"][/caption] The two projects are aimed at restoring the historic road linkage of Pakistan with China that was cut off aftera devastating land slide blocked the Hunza River and turned the area into  artificial Attabad lake. The Prime Minister performed the ground breaking of re-alignment of a 22-km long section of the Karakoram Highway (KKH). He also inaugurated the 510.42 million dollars up-gradation of a 110 km long section of the road from Raikot to Khunjerab that has now been widened and meets international standards of construction. Prime Minister Ashraf, who earlier had an aerial view of the Attabad lake, the upgraded road and the proposed road alignment site, said that the new roads were part of an effort of the government to provide the people of remote areas a fast and easy linkage with the rest of the country. Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf will perform the ground breaking of an ambitious 282 million dollar project for the re-alignment of 24 km long section of Karakoram Highway on Friday. The new road would replace a section of the existing road, submerged in an artificial lake created by a massive landslide in the Hunza river, at Attabad in 2010. The Prime Minster reached Gilgit in a special air craft and he was warmly welcomed by Chief Minister GB Syed Mehdi Shah, Governor GB Pir Karam Ali Shah and Federal Minister Communications Arbab Alamgir Khan and senior authorities of the region.]]>
